Proximity to Truth is not Enough
Dec 9, 2018 • Jon Aragon • Matthew 2:1-12
This Holy Family, (Mary, Joseph and King baby Jesus) as Matthew recounts the story, were fleeing because of a “well-founded fear of persecution” because of their “membership in a particular social group,” in this case people with young children living in Bethlehem.
Matthew illuminates their situation. Look again at verse 13.
Get up! Take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt
The greek word to focus on here is pheuge, “flee,”
from which derive the word (can anyone guess) “refugee,” My goodness even angel identifies the Holy Family as refugees.
Mary, Joseph and Jesus were refugees seeking asylum. Immigrating to another land for safety. What does that say about how we should treat. Foreigners, outsiders, immigrants.
